The Lanikai sprint distance race was first conceived in 2002 out of pure love for the sport, and the idea that anyone can participate in the exciting world of triathlon. This manageable distance allows novice athletes to aim for an athletic multi-sport challenge and gives experienced athletes an opportunity to test their quick-speed racing abilities.
Throughout the years, friendships have been built, and a sense of community blossomed. Many still Live Like Duda in memory of Eduardo “Duda” Sa, a beloved and active member of the triathlon community who left us too early. And when a repeat champion of this event experienced tragedy in 2018, many embraced the occasion to support her. Lectie Altman’s story still inspires us with her Hawaiian open ocean swimming success, and induction into the Bucknell University Hall of Fame.
The Lanikai Triathlon provides an opportunity for a community to rally around one another, demonstrating support and compassion. We are honored to be a part of that creation, and are happy to be bringing it back!
